Aftermarket vs. OEM Automotive Parts

OEM automotive parts are parts that come directly on a new vehicle from the vehicle manufacturer.  OEM stands for “Original Equipment Manufacturer.” Most of the time these parts are only available through a dealership parts department or a salvage yard. When you take your vehicle into a dealership to be repaired, most of the time your vehicle will be repaired with OEM parts

Aftermarket parts are auto parts that are not made by the vehicle manufacturer. Companies that make aftermarket parts provide a greater selection and variety of parts, usually at much lower prices. Independent repair shops generally use a combination of both aftermarket and OEM parts depending on price, availability and personal preference. Often aftermarket parts companies work out any problems that exist with the OEM part. Some companies, such as NAPA, specialize in specific parts. This means greater selection and a wider range of prices. Aftermarket parts are more available than OEM parts. Any parts store or garage is likely to carry an aftermarket part that fits your vehicle. It expands your options for servicing your vehicle by making parts more readily available. Often when ordering a new OEM part you have to wait to get it.

A number of companies make parts designed to function the same or in some cases even better than the original. This provides a service to the customer by keeping parts priced competitively and available. Without aftermarket companies OEM manufacturers would have a monopoly and most parts would be priced higher.

In some cases, the vehicle manufacturer does not make all of the parts for their vehicles. Manufacturers outsource parts from multiple companies that also make aftermarket parts.  For example, BBS is an OE supplier to Volkswagen but, in addition to supplying parts to Volkswagen, BBS sells the same types of parts under its own brand.

Aftermarket Wheels and Rims

Alloy wheels are generally lighter, provide superior strength and are chosen for their size and looks.  Many people upgrade from stock wheels to aftermarket alloy wheels to gain better performance and handling. Because alloy wheels are lighter than steel wheels, they allow for a quicker response and better handling.

Aftermarket alloy wheels and rims come in a wide assortment of styles. They can personalize a vehicle and make it truly unique. Alloy rims can give your car a sporty, luxurious or even a muscle car look. They can turn your average car into something that gets looks and attention. There are a large number of designs and styles from which to choose to make a vehicle a personal statement. For the true car enthusiast, it is all about the performance and handling, the look of their vehicle, and making the vehicle truly an extension of their personality.
